Oakland Hills to undergo renovation, close for 2 years | by Kevin Casey for GolfWeek.com
The layout, a Donald Ross design dubbed “The Monster” by Ben Hogan after his 1951 U.S. Open win, was not on the schedule for any future majors.
I’ve had the absolute honor of playing Oakland Hills a few times back in the day. Ben Hogan was absolutely right. I’d expect to hear about a major coming back to the Detroit area once work is completed. Great news.
JoAnne Carner, 79, impresses despite missed cut in Illinois | by GolfWeek Staff for GolfWeek.com
She ran out of steam, though, on the final nine and finished off with a second-round 83. At 16 over, she will miss the cut. Still, her performance was a joy to watch.
Even with Beth Ann Nichols doing a great job of covering Carner’s play via Twitter it remains very disappointing that Fox Sports chose to not cover the first two rounds of the U.S. Senior Women’s Open. Golf needs a vibrant history and we missed seeing some great living examples of that history in action over the last two days. I’d expect plenty of highlight packages from Fox on Saturday and Sunday, but, with such a limited broadcast schedule even then, too little attention is being given to such a significant event. A real shame.
