“Perhaps the most important aspect of our schedule is the consistency — continuing to deliver strong playing opportunities both in North America and around the world, while growing overall purse levels every year,” said LPGA Commissioner Mike Whan. “There is simply no better Tour opportunity in the world, when it comes to purses, global TV coverage or strength of field.”
There is no doubt now that the LPGA Tour has committed to taking their tour global. With the official announcement of their 2018 season, only 19 of their 34 official events will be played in the United States. My calculator app tells me that results in just under 56% of the tournaments being played on U.S. soil. This compares to something closer to an 80% rate of play in the U.S. for the PGA Tour.
But so what?
Golf has clearly been working hard to become an international game. All of the tours have made great efforts to expand their appeal globally. This increases the potential audience and, thus, the potential pool of corporate sponsors that are the life-blood of the professional game.
Don’t be too quick to assume that the LPGA has looked to take their game global simply because there isn’t sufficient corporate support in the United States. While there is some truth to that, it’s important to give the LPGA credit for accepting the challenge of becoming a global tour and making it a growing success.
Growth in the game of golf? Sounds like the LPGA is doing it right to me.
