…the Executive Board approved the overall composition of the sports programme for the Olympic Games 2024 to include all 28 sports on the programme of the Olympic Games Rio 2016.

Good news for fans of Olympic Golf. Yesterday the International Olympic Committee announced that golf will be included in the Summer Games through at least 2024.

The IOC also indicated that the likely hosts of the 2024 and 2028 games will be Paris and Los Angeles. However, the committee has yet to decide which city will host which games. They said to check back with them in September.

It’s clear that the committee would like to see at least one more successful Olympic Golf cycle before locking in the sport for the 2028 games no matter where they are held. While there were some issues with the return of golf during the 2016 Rio games, the generally positive reception by those that participated was refreshing. There has been some discussion of changing the format of the competition away from the traditional 72-hole stroke play format. Some would like to see a more team-oriented tournament. For now, the format stays the same.

Related to this decision by the IOC, we can now almost certainly expect the PGA of America and the other powers that be to announce the movement of the PGA Championship to May and The Players to March by at least 2020. No one wants to see a repeat of the compressed men’s major event calendar that occurred in 2016.

Golf continues to expand on the world stage. Even with there being a few growing pains it all feels well worth it.
